2026-10-31 — Moved onto the shared template; the documented bugs fixed; umask and symbolic tools added

The site now renders through the same template as the other tools: tools hub, embeddable widget, generated privacy and terms pages.
Fixed: a four-digit mode such as 4755 was reported as 0755, silently dropping setuid. Special bits are kept and shown.
Fixed: 778 rendered Others: --- (NaN) and abc printed chmod abc. Non-octal input is now rejected with a message.
Fixed: 000 printed a blank chmod <filename>. It now prints chmod 000.
Added: symbolic input (rwxr-xr-x, rwsr-xr-x).
Added: umask calculator and chmod symbolic calculator.
Unchanged by choice: a short octal input still pads on the left (7 is 0007), because that is what chmod 7 file does.

2026-10-11 — Edge cases measured and documented

Ran the shipped calcChmod in a headless harness against inputs it had never been fed, and wrote the results into the About page rather than guessing at them. Three reproduce every time:

4755 reports as 0755. Leading zeros are stripped before the length check, and anything longer than three digits keeps only its last three — so the setuid/setgid digit disappears without warning.
000 prints chmod <filename>. Consecutive zeros collapse and the emitted command loses its mode argument.
Non-octal characters produce NaN, not an error. 778 renders Others: --- (NaN); abc prints chmod abc as though it were a command.

No behaviour changed today. Refusing a 778 typo with a red message would be better than rendering --- (NaN), but that fix belongs with tests pinning each of these inputs — not as a quiet edit while people are mid-check. The inputs above are the test fixtures until then; the About page states them plainly in the meantime.

2026-10-08 — Sitemap scope corrected

Sitemaps now generate from build output and list only registered domains (commit d0bf073). chmodtest.com is not registered, so this tool had been riding in a sitemap that pointed nowhere.

2026-10-07 — Pro Tips panel

Added the Pro Tips & Gotchas panel shared across all eighteen tools: the setuid-digit trap, why a lone 7 pads left, and what chmod does that this decoder cannot see.

2026-10-06 — Contrast fixes

Dark-theme muted text and the primary button's hover state failed WCAG contrast (commits 5cae079, fac916d). Fixed across all sites in one pass.

Applied the monorepo's shared footer grid (14fdd2f) so every static tool links to its siblings consistently. Before this, each app carried a hand-written footer that drifted.

2026-09-15 — Launch

Initial version: octal to symbolic, per-class breakdown, copyable chmod command, and preset buttons for the common modes — all client-side, shipped together on launch day along with the Cloudflare Pages deploy for all eighteen apps.
